These supplements will they eliminate hirsutism?

No, they will reduce hair growth and make it slower after 3 months of use. However, to eliminate the hair follicle, you must necessarily use a permanent hair removal method (laser or intense pulsed light).

Why is my hair growth increasing?

The increase in hair growth in women, also known as hirsutism, can be due to several causes, often related to hormonal imbalances. Here are the main reasons:

    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS):
PCOS is the most common cause of hirsutism. It is a hormonal disorder that can increase androgen levels (male hormones such as testosterone) in women, leading to excessive hair growth.

    Endocrine Disorders:
In addition to PCOS, other endocrine disorders such as adrenal or ovarian tumors, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or Cushing's disease can also cause excessive production of androgens.

    Medications:
Certain medications can cause increased hair growth by influencing hormones or directly stimulating hair growth. These medications include some steroids, blood pressure medications, and immunosuppressants.

    Genetic Factors:
In some families, greater body hair is genetically normal, even without any underlying hormonal imbalance.

    Hormonal Changes:
Hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during menopause, can also affect hair growth. During menopause, the decrease in estrogen can amplify the effects of androgens, leading to increased hair growth. Stopping birth control pills can also raise androgen levels, thereby increasing hair growth.

    Idiopathic:
Sometimes, a woman may experience increased hair growth with no apparent cause, known as idiopathic hirsutism. This could be due to increased sensitivity of hair follicles to normal androgen levels.

How long should I take the treatment to see a real difference?

We consider that the results are truly visible after at least 2 months of treatment.

Which doctor for excessive hair growth?

To manage excessive hair growth, or hirsutism, you can consult several types of specialists depending on the suspected underlying cause:

Dermatologist: A dermatologist specializes in treating skin, hair, and nail conditions. They can offer solutions for managing hair growth, such as laser hair removal or electrolysis, and assess any skin issues related to hirsutism.

Endocrinologist: An endocrinologist treats hormonal disorders and is often consulted for hirsutism linked to conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Cushing's disease, or other hormonal imbalances. This specialist can help regulate hormones through medication or other interventions.

Gynecologist: For women, the gynecologist can also be a starting point, especially if the excessive hair growth is suspected to be related to reproductive issues like PCOS. The gynecologist can conduct initial evaluations and, if necessary, refer you to an endocrinologist.

General Practitioner (GP): You can also start by consulting your family doctor or GP, who can assess your situation and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist for more specific treatment.

    What hormonal tests for hirsutism?

To assess hirsutism, a hormonal panel may include the following tests:

Total and free testosterone to directly measure androgen levels.
DHEA-S to identify a possible adrenal source of androgens.
Androstenedione to complete the androgenic profile.
17-hydroxyprogesterone to check for possible congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Cortisol to detect possible overproduction by the adrenal glands, such as in Cushing's disease.
Prolactin and luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) to evaluate other aspects of hormonal function, particularly related to the reproductive system.
If you suspect you have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), we invite you to read our blog post detailing the diagnosis of PCOS, including the necessary hormonal tests to confirm this condition.

    Managing Hirsutism

To manage hirsutism associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), there are several methods to reduce or eliminate unwanted hair. Here are some common options:

    Treating the Causes of Hirsutism:

It is essential to effectively treat the underlying causes of PCOS to better manage this symptom. An appropriate treatment can reduce excessive hair growth after approximately three months of use. Topical treatments may also be necessary to target hair follicles.

    Laser Hair Removal:
Laser hair removal can be effective in significantly reducing hair growth. This method uses light beams to target and destroy hair follicles. Multiple sessions are generally required to achieve optimal results.

    Electrolysis:
Electrolysis is a method that destroys hair follicles one by one using an electrical current. It is a more permanent option, but it may require many sessions, especially if the area to be treated is large.

    Depilatory Creams:
There are creams prescribed by doctors, such as eflornithine, that slow down hair growth by locally affecting the enzyme involved in its production.

    Hirsutism and Testosterone

Hirsutism is closely linked to high levels of testosterone and other androgens in women. Here’s how these factors are connected and the impact they can have:

    Role of Testosterone

Testosterone is a steroid hormone primarily produced by the testes in men and, in smaller amounts, by the ovaries in women. The adrenal glands also produce this hormone in both sexes. In women, testosterone is normally present in small amounts, but when these levels increase, it can lead to various symptoms, including hirsutism.

    Mechanism of Hirsutism

Hirsutism occurs when hair follicles become hypersensitive to testosterone or when levels of this hormone are abnormally high. The hair follicles respond to this increase by producing thicker, darker hair, typically observed in areas more common in men, such as the jawline, chest, or back.

A comprehensive article on hyperandrogenism is available on our blog.

    Hirsutism and Cortisol

Hirsutism can be linked to high levels of cortisol, particularly in cases of Cushing's disease, a hormonal disorder where the adrenal glands produce too much of this hormone. Here’s how these elements are connected:

    Cortisol and Hormones

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It plays a crucial role in many bodily processes, including stress management, regulating metabolism, and modulating the immune system. However, an excess of cortisol can disrupt overall hormonal balance, including androgen levels.

    Cushing's Disease and Hirsutism

In Cushing's disease, elevated cortisol levels can lead to an increase in androgen production by the adrenal glands. This can cause hirsutism in women, characterized by excessive growth of thick, dark hair in areas typically male, such as the face, back, and chest.

    Effective supplement

Improvement in my condition and especially much more regular cycle thanks to Luminaissance. On the other hand, for Andromaque, I don't have enough perspective to give an objective opinion since I only did the 1-month treatment.
