For androgenetic alopecia, a hormonal assessment may be recommended, especially for women showing signs of hyperandrogenism. This assessment should be conducted between the second and fifth day of the menstrual cycle, after a month without hormonal treatment. The hormones to measure include testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), 17-hydroxyprogesterone (17OH progesterone), and delta-4 androstendione. Other tests may include the systematic measurement of TSH, as well as ferritin levels to rule out an iron deficiency.

For premenopausal women with progressive androgenetic alopecia and menstrual cycle abnormalities, a hormonal assessment to check for hyperandrogenism is recommended.
